History of Bard Catheters
Bard catheters were first produced under C.R. Bard Inc. in the early 1900′s. Charles R. Bard founded the company in 1907 and incorporated in 1923. By 1926 Charles Bard sold the company and 3 years later, in 1934 the new owners, John Willits and Edson Outwin entered the catheter business with the introduction of the Foley catheter.
By the mid 1900′s Bard sold over $1 million in catheter supplies and relocated into a larger facility in Summit, NJ. In addition to urological catheters, Bard soon developed the first arterial prosthesis under the direction of Dr. DeBakey. In 1957 Bard began selling Foley catheters in sterile packaging. This was an industry-first and just one of many catheter innovations to come. In 1960 Bard introduced the first latex balloon catheter creating the standard by which most catheters are measured today.
Bard was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1968, 5 years after it’s IPO in 1963. Continued innovation and expansion of their catheter business as well as expansion into cardiology, anesthesiology and radiology paved the way for Bards successes into the 1990′s where sales first topped $1 billion in 1994.
